Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act:
The Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act was enacted on January 1, 1991. The purpose of the Act is two-fold:
- To provide the right of access to information under the control of the police in accordance with the principles that information should be available to the public.
- Exemptions from this right of access should be limited and specific and decisions on disclosure should be reviewed independently
- To protect the privacy of individuals
The Act also allows individuals to make privacy complaints should they believe a member of a police service has violated their privacy rights.

The Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act also enables individuals to correct personal information or attach a statement of disagreement to a record held by the police. REQUESTS FOR INFORMATION ? ACCESS/CORRECTION

Pursuant to the Municipal Freedom of Information & Protection of Privacy Act (the Act), individuals can attend in person at the Belleville Police Service in order to make a request for information or correction to a record. Requests can also be submitted in writing, addressed as follows:

Requests for access or correction to records must be accompanied by a $5.00 Application Fee. Cheques must be made payable to Belleville Police Service or cash accepted.
Under the Act, the institution has 30 days to respond to a request.

Provide as much detail as possible, i.e. date, time, location, etc.
Produce two (2) forms of identification when submitting a request.
Payment of $5.00 Application Fee, with a receipt provided to requester.
If payment by mail, send cheque or money order made payable to the Belleville Police Service.
