Belleville Police Chief and Deputy commit to Indigenous Student Bursary

A new bursary is being offered through the Belleville Police Service, to a local Indigenous high school student who has an interest in policing and law enforcement.

Police Chief Mike Callaghan and Deputy Chris Barry are each contributing $1,000 towards the annual $2,000 BPS Indigenous Student Bursary, which will be awarded to an Indigenous student at a local high school who plans to take the Police Foundations Program at Loyalist College.

The bursary would be handed out at the end of the student’s first year of studies.

Callaghan says he hopes the program will “break down the barriers between police and young people in our community” while also aiming to “remove some of the financial barriers facing Indigenous youth who are interested in a career in policing”.
