Cemetery Vandalism

The Belleville Police Service continues to investigate the horrible acts of vandalism that have occurred at two local cemeteries. The investigation now encompasses a third incident of vandalism at one of the original cemeteries.

On the 9th of November, 2021 at approximately 8 am, police were called to St. James Cemetery where it was determined that approximately 150 headstones had been vandalized by spray paint.

In an effort to assist the investigation several local residents - who wish to remain anonymous - have put forth a $7500.00 reward for information leading to the arrest of person or persons responsible for these disturbing crimes.

In the last twenty-four hours Belleville Police Service has had two reports of vandalism to two area cemeteries.

On the 3rd of November, 2021 at approximately 9:00 am police were called to St. James cemetery in the cities west end. It was determined that approximately 200 headstones were vandalized by spray paint.

On the 4th of November, 2021 at approximately 1:00 am police were called to the Elmwood cemetery on River Road. It was determined that approximately 255 headstones had also been vandalized by spray paint.

The investigation into these two incidents continue. Police are asking the public’s assistance in attempting to identify the individual(s) involved in these incidents. Anyone with information is asked to call Belleville Police at 613-966-0882 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222- 8477 (TIPS).
