Selective Traffic Enforcement Initiative (STEP)
Belleville, Ontario: Belleville Police Service's ongoing commitment to road safety in our community continues with the theme of intersection safety being identified for the month of March.
Intersection safety is a vital component in reducing the number of motor vehicle collisions and improving overall road safety. Officers will be increasing their attention on stop sign governed intersections. The Highway Traffic Act states that every driver or street car operator approaching a stop sign at an intersection shall stop his or her vehicle at a marked stop line or, if none, then immediately before entering the nearest crosswalk or, if none then immediately before entering the intersection Section 136(1)(a)
Or every driver or street car operator approaching a stop sign at an intersection shall yield the right of way to traffic in the intersection or approaching the intersection on another highway so closely that to proceed would constitute an immediate hazard and, having so yielded the right of way, may proceed. Section 136(1) (b)
The fine for disobeying the stop sign is set at $85 plus the victim surcharge of $25 with a total fine payable of $110 and 3 demerit points added to the motorists drivers licence.
