REDUCE IMPAIRED DRIVING EVERYWHERE (R.I.D.E.)

Belleville, Ontario -

Between 1 December and 31December, 2013 Belleville Police Service will conduct a month long initiative targeted at impaired driving in Belleville.

The RIDE program in Belleville runs throughout the year but we will have an increased presence during the festive season.

Historically, the festive R.I.D.E. has focused on impaired driving by alcohol and we will continue that. However, as stated by the Canada Safety Council "impairment goes far beyond alcohol. Increasingly, motorists are gambling with their safety and the safety of others by knowingly driving under the influence of drugs. These drugs include illegal substances, prescription medications and over-the-counter remedies. Driving while distracted or under the influence of drugs poses significant safety risks to everyone and can be curbed through preventative measures, awareness and enforcement.

This year Belleville Police Service will expand its focus in relation to R.I.D.E.. to include drugged driving and distracted driving. Our community can expect spot checks at any time throughout the month of December and as well anticipate police to enforce appropriate penalties related to impaired driving.

Whether by drugs, alcohol, fatigue or some other contributing factor, there is no excuse for impaired driving. Be responsible and be safe this holiday season.
