Halloween Safe Streets

On Sunday the 31st of October 2010, the Belleville Police Service had approximately 160 extra people patrolling the city to ensure the safety of our children. This was the largest group of participating volunteers that the service has had to date.

They consisted of patrol officers, Auxiliary officers, Community Policing volunteers, Loyalist College students, Quinte Amateur Radio Club members and local High School Students.

Our volunteers were easily identifiable as they wore orange florescent vests and walked in groups of three or four. The volunteers were assigned throughout city and their purpose was to assist us by having an ?extra set of eyes and ears' to help keep our City and our children safe.

There were only seven occurrences reported to the police from 5:00 p.m. on the 31st to 5 a.m. on November 1st. None of these reported incidents were specific to Halloween. Police attribute much of this to the support they received from the community and the volunteers who may have acted as a deterrent to pranksters.

Halloween in the Children's Safety Village

On Saturday October 30th The Children's Safety Village Board hosted Halloween in the Village from 10:00 a.m. to ? 2:00 p.m. Children's Safety Village and Community Policing volunteers along with community sponsors handed out candy, assisted with crafts, played a Halloween safety video and made a draw for two bikes.

Saturday's event was successful with 137 ballots filled out for the draw for the two bicycles. The event saw several hundred parents and children through the village. Chief McMullan was present and made the draw for the bike winners; 6 year old Ben McCrae and 6 year old Luca Dean.

Other activities for the children included coloring, gourd decorating and a movie about the history of Halloween and Halloween safety tips for the kids
