Ongoing scams

Belleville, ON – Belleville Police officers have been receiving an increased amount of complaints regarding a scam. The unknown perpetrators utilize online sites to contact citizens attempting to sell personal items. They send a fake money order to the person for an amount greater than the asking price. Once received, they asked the unsuspecting victim to deposit the fraudulent money order and send back the difference. This leaves the victim with a cheque that eventually bounces and at a loss of money. Belleville Police are urging the community to be vigilant when dealing with persons over the phone or internet; and, not to provide any personal information over the phone or the internet.
