Fraud Alert:

Belleville, Ontario The Belleville Police Service is warning local retailers to be vigilant when selling large quantities of gift cards following a suspicious incident in the city last week.

Friday February 7, 2014, officers were called to a local retailer after a lone male attempted to purchase approximately $700 worth of prepaid gift cards using a credit card. When asked to verify his identity as per the store's policy on purchases of gift cards valued at more than $100 the unknown male left the store without making the purchase.

The actions of the male match those of suspects throughout Ontario and Quebec who have used fraudulent credit cards to make large purchases of similar-style gift and prepaid credit cards.

While typically suspects tend to target larger retailers and gas station outlets, this occurrence happened at a smaller, locally-owned business.

The Belleville Police Service is asking any retailers or employees with similar occurrences to contact police and report the incident at 613-966-0882. Anyone with information about this crime or any other crime can also contact Quinte Crime Stoppers.
