Fraud  Belleville, Ontario; On June 6, 2014, Belleville Police were contacted by a local cheque cashing establishment to report a fraud. As a result of investigation it was learned a person had googled local labourer jobs and made contact with a male by the name, "Sam”.

Two non-white males, who identified themselves as uncle and nephew, picked up the labourer and drove him to Kingston for a job. The job site was locked and they were unable to do any work. "Sam” offered to pay cash for his work and for rest of the week in advance but had insufficient funds to do so. "Sam” offered a cheque to the labourer for his pay as well as his nephew and asked the customer to cash the cheque for him, giving the other half to his nephew. The cheque was cashed and has since been learned it was fraudulent.

Police are reminding the public:

  • Please be cautious when applying to online jobs.
  • Don’t cash cheques for other persons.
  • Don’t cash cheques and turn money over to other people as a favour.
  • Don’t accept cheques for amounts other than what’s owed.
  • If it sounds too good to be true it probably is.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call the Belleville Police Service or Quinte Crimes Stoppers.
