UPDATE:

The investigation into this fraud is continuing and appears to have been an isolated incident involving one person. Officers have subsequently communicated with the Community Engagement Lead from the Canadian Diabetes Association in Kingston and were advised that the Belleville Police Service received incorrect information when initially advised that there were no campaigns associated to the Diabetes Association that would involve door to door solicitation of funds. In fact, there are two fundraising walks scheduled in the area to take place in May and there is the potential for participants to reach out for sponsorship in this manner. The Lions Club Walk for Diabetes is scheduled to take place on May 7th in Napanee and the Telus Walk is scheduled to be held at Zwick’s Park in Belleville on May 14th.

The Belleville Police Service apologizes for any confusion and reminds area residents that the best way to ensure that your donations are handled appropriately is to donate online on the appropriate sponsorship page or to only donate in person to people that they know personally. Members of the public can contact the Community Engagement Lead of the Canadian Diabetes Association at 613-384-9374 if they have any further questions.
