Belleville, Ontario ? On 22 June, 2010, Belleville Police became aware of an email that is circulating in our community. The essence of the email is that it originates from The Presidency office from Abuja, Nigeria. The letter proclaims to be an attempt to pay funds that are owed but the catch is that the potential recipient needs to provide their name, address, telephone numbers, passport and driver's license. This is not an authentic letter.

Police are reminding the public of the risks of providing personal information to unknown recipients over the telephone or internet. Identity thieves do not need a lot of information to carry out criminal activity that could compromise or damage your identity.

Prevention is the best protection against fraud or identity theft.

  • Guard your personal and financial information
  • Keep your social insurance number confidential
  • Beware of imposters
  • Keep your mail safe

Phone Busters motto for Fraud is Recognize It. Report It. Stop It.
