Pursuit of a stolen vehicle
On Jan. 25th, 2009, at 12:15 a.m., Police observed a stolen vehicle being operated on Bell Blvd. The 2005 Toyota Matrix had been reported stolen on Jan. 20th from an east end residence in Belleville. The stolen vehicle failed to stop for Police as it continued S/B on N.Front St. With the escalating speed, the officer disengaged the pursuit near Valleyview Cres. Witnesses on College St. pointed east on College St. where the Toyota was stuck in a snowbank at Geddes St.. A female passenger exited the Toyota and was taken into custody. The male driver was still attempting to flee the scene when the vehicle reversed into the stopped cruiser. Once freed, the Toyota continued S/B on Geddes St. to Strachan where it attempted to park behind a house. A second cruiser pinned the Toyota and the driver was taken into custody. A 21 year old Belleville man who had just been released from jail on January 19th has been charged with the following offences:
(a) Possession of stolen property exceeding $5000.
(b) Flight from Police
(c) Dangerous Driving
(d) Fail to stop at the scene of an accident
(e) Breach of probation
No injuries to any of the involved people. The cruiser sustained minor damage to the front end. The female passenger was eventually released unconditionally.
