BellevillePolice Service - Bill 118 Hand-Held Devices Ban
The Belleville Police Service wishes to remind the public that as of Monday, October 26, 2009, Ontario?s Bill 118 comes into effect, making it illegal for driver?s to talk, text, type, dial, or e-mail using a hand-held device while operating a motor vehicle.
The new law focuses on limiting distractions for drivers so they can focus on their responsibility of operating a motor vehicle.
From October 26, 2009 to February 1, 2010, there will be a three month ?educational? phase whereby motorists may be cautioned for the offence, however, under extreme circumstances, a motorist may be summoned to court.
Police officers across the province still have the ability to lay Careless Driving charges and/or Dangerous Driving charges.
Emergency services employees will continue to be allowed to use hand-held devices, as will those drivers who have found themselves in an emergency situation and need to call 9-1-1.
The Belleville Police Service encourages the public to keep this into consideration and to drive safely.
