Proactive Road Safety- Junkers and Clunkers
Belleville, Ontario ? On 6 October, 2010, Belleville Police Traffic Management Unit, Kingston Police Traffic Servicesand the Ministry of Environment conducted a safety defect enforcement campaign that focused on passenger vehicles and small commercial trucks.
A total of 17 vehicles received a full mechanical fitness inspection resulting in 15 of the vehicles failing (88%).
A total of 19 vehicles received preliminary inspections with 14 (or 73 %) being taken out of service for minor defects (i.e. defective brakes, tires, permits or minor mechanical issues) that could be fixed prior to leaving or were towed away to be repaired.
A total of 21 Emission inspections were completed with 5 failures (23%).
A total of 22 charges were laid of which 4 notices for operating a vehicle with no insurance, 1 suspended driverand 1 take auto without consent.
In total 9 vehicles were determined to be so unsafe that it would not be feasible to repair them to safety standards.
Theft and Theft of Motor Vehicle
Belleville, Ontario ? On 6 October, 2010 police attended at a Belleville YMCA in response to two complaints of thefts that occurred sometime between 2:45 p.m. and 3:50 p.m.... Each victim reported that they had secured their property in a locker and when returning to the locker to prepare to leave noted that the lock was missing. The thieves stole a set of keys and the vehicle associated to these keys from one victim and the wallet of another male victim.
A red 2007 Toyota Matrix (bearing Ontario plates BHNY 842) was stolen from the parking lot. YMCA staff will be taking additional security measures as a result of these incidents.
These investigations are ongoing.
