Three teenagers hospitalized, fourth charged - Belleville, Ontario
BELLEVILLE - Belleville Police are looking to the public for assistance after three teenagers were taken to hospital for a drug overdose after being provided a lethal anti-depression medication while attending house parties in the city over the past several days.
On Tuesday June 30, 2015 Belleville police were called to two separate incidents in which paramedics were dealing with teenaged males who had overdosed on an unknown drug. At one of the scenes a 16-year-old male was identified by several people as being the provider of the drug and was subsequently arrested.
The investigation led police to determine the male was in attendance at a party on Sidney Street the afternoon of June 30, 2015 where he distributed the drug to other teenaged boys. According to hospital physicians, the drug – which was identified as a potent medication for depression – is considered one of the most lethal available if misused.
The victims were subsequently taken to Belleville hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries – and one was transferred to Kingston hospital in serious condition.
Further investigation revealed a third teenager – a 16-year-old female – who had also overdosed on the same drug over the weekend and is currently in the Belleville hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.
She is believed to have been provided the drug by the accused during another party held Saturday June 27, 2015.
The 16-year-old male was charged with one count of Possession of a Controlled Substance under the CDSA and two counts each of Criminal Negligence Causing Bodily Harm – Sect. 221 of the Criminal Code.
The male was held for a bail hearing.
Investigators believe there may be other victims who were potentially provided the same drug at house parties over the past several days.
