The Belleville Police Service responded to 53 calls for service from July 25th, 2020 at 5:00 a.m. to July 26th, 2020 at 5:00 a.m.

 

Vehicle strikes hydro pole

Belleville Ontario- On 25 July 2020, at 10:15pm, police were called to the area of Charles Street with regard to a black BMW striking a hydro pole. Witnesses reported that the driver of the vehicle exited, removed the licence plates, and he fled toward Pine Street. The investigation is continuing, and witnesses are asked to contact Cst Jordan Wells at jwells@police.belleville.on.ca

 

Rental scams continue

Belleville Ontario- On both 24 and 25 July 2020, police received calls regarding online rental scams. In both instances, the victim contacted the “renter” on a Kijiji ad and agreed to send a small deposit for an apartment. Upon arriving to look at the residence, they realized that they had been scammed. People are reminded to be very cautious who they send money to and make efforts to ensure it’s being sent to a legitimate source.   

 

Disqualified driver

Belleville Ontario- On 26 July 2020, at 12:45am, police stopped a vehicle on Moira Street West. Police identified the driver as 33-year-old Chad Potvin of Picton who was a disqualified driver stemming from a previous driving related criminal conviction. Potvin was arrested and later released at the scene with a court date of 10 September. The vehicle that he was driving belonged to the passenger in the vehicle, and it was impounded for 45 days.

 

Impaired driver

Belleville Ontario- On 26 July 2020, at 1:55am, police received a call regarding a possible impaired driver. The caller reported that the driver was stopped in the middle of an intersection and almost hitting the median several times. Police located the vehicle on North Front Street and spoke with the driver. The driver showed obvious signs of alcohol consumption, and he was given a roadside screening test. The driver, 49-year-old Radcliffe McLean of Trenton, was arrested for over 80mgs. He was transported to Belleville Police Service where he provided two breath tests. McLean was charged with over 80mgs. He was released with a 27 August court date.
