DEPUTY CHIEF of POLICE Swearing In Ceremony

The Belleville Police Services Board wish to announce that longtime member of the Belleville Police Service, Paul Vandegraaf will take the rank of Deputy Chief of Police on January 5, 2010.

Deputy Chief Vandegraaf joined the Belleville Police Service in 1991 as a Police Constable after completing his Bachelor of Arts degree at Carleton University. During his time as a patrol officer in the Uniform Patrol Division, Deputy Chief Vandegraaf was a Coach Officer, Bike Patrol Officer and eventually reassigned to the Community Policing Unit. He was one of the founding Constables in the Belleville Community Policing Program.

In 1996, Deputy Chief Vandegraaf was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was assigned to the Uniform Patrol Division where he served as a Patrol Sergeant. Shortly thereafter, he was reassigned within the Uniform Division as the Administration Sergeant.

In 1998, Deputy Chief Vandegraaf was reassigned to the Criminal Investigations Division, where his primary responsibility was investigating incidents of sexual assault and child abuse. Deputy Chief Vandegraaf was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant in 2003 and was responsible for the management of a platoon within the Uniform Patrol Division.

In 2007, Deputy Chief Vandegraaf was promoted to the rank of Inspector, and was the unit commander of the Operations Division. This included Uniform Platoons, Traffic Unit, Canine Unit, Training, Community Policing, School Response, Children's Safety Village, and the Emergency Response Team.

Deputy Chief Vandegraaf has always been, and remains, very active in the community. He is a proud Rotarian and presently a member of the Rotary Club of Belleville, and a member of the Board of Directors, member of the Board of Directors of Victim Services, member of the Board of Counseling Service of Belleville and District and is an active member of the Belleville Minor Hockey Association as a coach, convener, and member of the Board of Directors.

Deputy Chief Vandegraaf and his wife Cathy have made Belleville their home for the past 19 years and are proud parents to their two children Meaghan and Ian. Deputy Chief Vandegraaf and his family look forward to remaining active in our community for many years to come.
