Baby rescued from vehicle

A quick-thinking Belleville police officer had to shatter a window to pull an infant inadvertently locked in a parked car yesterday.

Officers received a 911 dispatch to a business north of Highway 401 at 3 p.m., Thursday when a parent accidentally locked a baby in a car after loading groceries. There was concern given the age of the child and rising internal temperatures of the vehicle, which was not running at the time of the incident.

A Belleville police officer arrived at the scene within moments and smashed one of the windows, enabling access to the interior and the baby. The baby was checked by EMS shortly after being pulled from the vehicle and sustained no injuries. The officer sustained minor injuries along his arm from the shattered glass.

Canine team catches culprit

There were a few tense moments for residents in the city’s west hill area earlier this week as a neighbourhood was searched for a wanted man who took off on the run.

The incident took place around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday when an officer on Yeomans Street spotted a 29-year-old Belleville man wanted on a number of warrants.

When approached, the male took off running and was last seen in the area of Prince Charles School, heading towards the Lewis Street area.

A number of patrol units responded and cordoned off a large area of the west hill until the Belleville Police Canine Unit could arrive at the scene to assist with narrowing down the male’s location. The Belleville Police Traffic Unit also deployed a drone to assist with the search.

As a precaution during the search, a summer camp utilizing the school and grounds was placed on secure-and-hold status until the situation was resolved.

The Belleville Police Canine Unit tracked the suspect to a backyard on Howard Street, where he was arrested without further incident and held for a show cause hearing.

The warrants for the male stemmed from investigations into several domestic-related incidents involving the male and a female partner. The name and details of the male are not being released to protect the identity of the complainant involved.

E-bike stolen

Belleville police are asking the public for assistance after and e-bike with a trailer were stolen from an address on Emily Street, Thursday.

Officers were called to investigate the incident shortly after 8:00 a.m. Sometime the night previous, unknown suspects stole a black and orange ‘Radrover’ e-bike with fat tires. Attached to the bike was a small trailer equipped to carry a child.
