Roadside stop leads to child pornography investigation
A roadside stop in Belleville last month led to child pornography charges against a 19-year-old city man.
On July 8, 2023 around 2:00 a.m. officers on patrol pulled over a vehicle on Moira Street West for a traffic violation. During the course of the investigation into the violation, the officer was advised of a local teenager who may be in possession of images that were exploiting children.
The Belleville Police Service’s Internet Child Exploitation Unit was called in to assist. A number of devices were seized and examined by investigators during the course of the investigation.
Last Thursday August 3, a 19-year-old male from Belleville was arrested and charged with two Criminal Code offences: Possession of Child Pornography and Accessing Child Pornography.
The male – whose name is not being released for investigative purposes – was released on conditions with a September 7 court date.
Arrested on warrants
Belleville police officers arrested a 39-year-old city resident on an outstanding warrant, Friday.
Officers on patrol in the city’s east end observed a male who was known to have an outstanding warrant for Failing to Comply with a Release Order.
Jeffrey Harris was arrested without incident and held for a show cause hearing the following day.
Hide-and-seek thief arrested
Belleville police received a call from staff at a north end business Saturday at 6 p.m. after a male customer was observed hiding a number of items on his person before attempting to leave the store.
Officers located the male in the parking lot, where he was placed under arrest and the merchandise was recovered.
Charged with Theft Under $5,000 is Kevin Perrier of Belleville. Perrier was released on an undertaking with a September 21 court date.
Counterfeit money, drugs recovered
Saturday morning sharp-eyed city police officer nabbed a male believed to be responsible for a break-and-enter to a business earlier in the week.
The incident took placed around 7:30 a.m. when the male suspect was spotted on Dundas Street West.
The male, who was also on probation, was arrested and found to be in possession of methamphetamine and a small amount of counterfeit US and Canadian currency.
Charged with Break and Enter, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Counterfeit Currency and Breach of Probation is Robert Palin, 43, of Belleville. Palin was released on an undertaking with a September 7 court date.
Acting strangely on Waterfront Trail
A male acting strangely on a popular city walkway was arrested, Saturday.
The incident took place Saturday morning around 11 a.m. when several members of the public noticed a male acting in a peculiar manner along the Waterfront Trail. While walking, he started harassing people using the trail and was also observed attempting to enter parked vehicles and a nearby home.
Officers responding to the scene located the male, a 32-year-old from Belleville, who was on three separate probation orders.
The male was arrested on three counts of Breaching Probation and held for a show cause hearing August 6.
Father arrested, young daughter brought to family
A 43-year-old Belleville man picked the wrong time to head out for a drunken walk with his young daughter, Sunday evening.
Responding to a complaint from a member of the public who was concerned for the child’s safety, officers located the male – who was heavily intoxicated – walking with his 8-year-old daughter on Tracey Street around 9 p.m.
The male, who was also wanted on two outstanding warrants for breaching probation conditions, was arrested without incident and held for a bail hearing Monday.
The child was transported by officers to her residence and left in the care of family members.
Suspended driver pulled off the streets
A traffic stop Sunday evening on the city’s east side ended with charges against a 20-year-old Belleville man.
Officers conducting traffic enforcement pulled the vehicle over around 11 p.m. and found the driver to have a suspended licence. As well, he was also unable to provide a valid insurance card for the vehicle.
The male was charged with Drive While Suspended under the Highway Traffic Act and Failing to Provide an Insurance Card under the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act.
