Suspicious fire at former church

A fire at the former church Monday evening is being investigated by a number of agencies as an arson.

Belleville Police officers called to assist the Belleville Fire Department around 10:20 p.m. with cordoning off the area as crews battled the blaze at 333 Church Street.

As a preliminary investigation ensued, the blaze was deemed an arson by the Belleville Fire Department’s Fire Prevention investigation team.

Investigators with the Fire Prevention Office are working with detectives from the police service’s Criminal Investigations Division and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office to determine the cause and origin of the fire.

There were no reported injuries.

Indecent acts, break and enter

A 60-year-old Belleville man is being held for a bail hearing today after a troubling incident in the city’s west hill area late Monday.

Around 10:40 p.m. officers were called after multiple residents along Moira Street West reported a man wearing only women’s underwear running to windows of different residences and exposing himself.

Belleville Police officers arrived and located the man, who was also intoxicated, sitting in front of a residence along the street.

The man was charged with multiple counts of Trespassing and Night, Indecent Exposure to a Person Under 16 and Indecent Act in a Public Place and held for a show cause hearing Tuesday August 8, 2023.

 

Impaired driving charges, damaged pole

A vehicle into a hydro pole at a busy city intersection led to the arrest of a 43-year-old Belleville man on charges of impaired driving, Monday evening.

The incident occurred around 10:20 p.m. when police were dispatched to the intersection of Dundas and Front streets for a report of a motor vehicle collision.

A vehicle had struck a hydro pole and upon further investigation by responding officers, the motorist was arrested at the scene for impaired driving.

Charged with Impaired Driving and Having More than the Legal Limit of Alcohol in his blood is Stuart McIsaac, 43, of Belleville.

McIsaac was held until sober and released on an undertaking with a court date of August 24, 2023.

 

Unwanted person wanted on warrants

Belleville Police officers called to remove an unwanted 21-year-old woman trashing a house late Monday ended up making an arrest on several outstanding warrants.

Officers were called to a home north of the city for a disturbance around 10 p.m. by a homeowner who advised the female – who was heavily intoxicated – was smashing items inside the home.

Police arrived and found the female was wanted on outstanding warrants from Belleville Police and other jurisdictions for bail violations.

The female was held until sober and released on an undertaking with an August 24, 2023 court date.
